A little while ago we were asked to create some evocative images for the Vegetarian Society. Three dishes were required one of which would be the cover shot for their national magazine. Fantastic I thought, what a great project.

Initially they were just asking for photography services. They were offered our much more comprehensive package. We suggested that once the recipes had been created they should send them to us. We would then create the dishes from the recipes, style and photograph the finished dish.

The totally remote service was very appealing and we went ahead with the project. Being able to completely take care of the whole process for a client is a big plus. In fact we can do the recipe development as well. There’s a very talented commercial chef on the team… That’s Mrs T in case you didn’t know, of Milk & Honey fame.

The Vegetarian Society sent over some examples of work they liked as a guide. They’d already seen our work and knew we could create the look and feel they would love to have in their magazine, The Vegetarian.

Off To The Printers

The folks at The Vegetarian Society were very happy with our creations. We sent them several styling set-ups for each dish as they would be using them for promotions beyond their magazine. The highest profile shots were the cover image as you’d expect.

This is the cover photo they went with. We kept a lot of negative space to give their design team as much flexibility for the cover layout. The Vegetarian Cover Shot www.jonathanthompsonphotography.com

We also shot a beautifully fresh pasta salad. Keeping it bright and crisp to go with a springtime feel.

Lastly was a kidney bean burger. We wanted to get some real textures in this shot. The seeded bun, layers of salad and burger dressing draw you in for a bite.

Hello Magazine

I was emailed by Su Taylor of Veg Soc, as I call them now. Letting me know that our images are in Hello Magazine… That afternoon I was off into Chester with Tundra to pick myself up a copy. There’s nothing quite like seeing your work in print. Printed publications like Hello Magazine make it so much better. How many folks will try the recipe based on the image? I’ll never know. Like children, you send them out into the big wide world. You’ve done a great job. Now sit back and see how far they can climb.

Hello Magazine went with an alternative image for the cookies recipe as the main image on the page. I never thought my Nan’s old sowing box would be printed in Hello Magazine, but there it is. The kidney bean burger, pictured previously, was also featured in the same page. Result!!

There we have it. Thank you so much for stopping buy and sharing in our successes. We have very big plans and it’s taken a lot of hard work and perseverance to get this far. If I can give anyone any advice it would be to stay clear and focused on your dreams.

As Napoleon Hill says “The majority of men meet with failure because of their lack of persistence in creating new plans to take the place of those which fail.”

Have a great day folks. See you back here very soon.
